Associates and Bruce L. Scheiner, Attorneys for the Injured, knows that our beautiful Florida Keys have become world-wide tourist destinations and even the subject of pop culture music. But our Monroe County car accident lawyers understand that the concentration of traffic on only one road in and out of the Keys can pose challenges for drivers. More than in other situations, navigating Highway 1 requires attention and care behind the wheel. When careless or negligent drivers cause traffic crashes, our Monroe County accident attorneys have the skills needed to capably represent injury victims.
Encompassing the Florida Keys, along with portions of the state’s mainland that are included in Big Cypress National Preserve and in Everglades National Park, Monroe County was created in 1823. At that time, Florida was still a territory. The county is named for President James Monroe who was then in office. In its early days, Monroe County’s chief business was shipwreck salvage, but by the late 1800s, interest had shifted to cigar manufacturing. Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway helped open the way to Key West around the turn of the 20th century, but a hurricane destroyed much of the rail system in 1935. Eventually, U.S. Highway 1 – which remains Monroe County’s only highway – linked Key West with the mainland. Monroe County has five incorporated municipalities and nearly a dozen unincorporated communities. Key West is the county seat.
According to Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle data, Monroe County roads saw some 1,307 accidents in the most recent year for which information is available. That figure represented an increase over the previous year’s accidents. Monroe County personal injury and wrongful death lawyers at our firm know that injuries due to traffic crashes also are on the rise. On average, more than 3 people are hurt in crashes in our county every day, and about 2 fatalities occur each month. When accidents on Monroe County roads leave you hurt or take the life of a loved one, you can rely on our firm’s experience for the strong advocacy you need.
