Squeeze Play / Wide Turns
Trucks make wide turns because of their large size and because they are not as maneuverable as cars. These wide turns can put motorists at risk of being struck by a truck making a wide turn or of being trapped between the truck and the curb or between the truck and other cars.
Truckers need to know the vehicles they drive and make sure there are not motorists or pedestrians in the way before making a turn. The driver and trucking company can be held liable in cases where negligence contributes to or causes collision with a passenger vehicle or non-motorist. Associates and Bruce L. Scheiner, Attorneys for the Injured, has built a reputation for handling complex personal injury and wrongful death litigation since 1971.

Squeeze Play and Wide Right Turn Accidents
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration warns that truckers frequently swing wide to the left in order to safely make right turns. Unfortunately, the danger of these wide turns is compounded by the fact that truckers also have large blind spots to the sides of their trailers. Truckers making a turn may not see a vehicle if they don’t carefully check their blind spots before initiating a turn.
Drivers should be watchful for a truck’s blinker and should be patient and give the trucker room to make the turn without getting between the truck and curb. However, truck drivers also need to remain mindful that their vehicles make wide turns and can sometimes even run up on the curb. It is the job of the trucker to make accommodations for this characteristic of the truck and to ensure that drivers and pedestrians don’t get hit.
Commerical driver training is supposed to provide truckers with the skills and judgment to know when to turn and how to turn safely even in tight traffic situations. Truckers have a duty to follow their training and exercise reasonable care. If a trucker fails to judge the amount of space that exists or doesn’t look for cars on the sides, the trucker can be held responsible for resulting collisions. Some areas also prohibit truckers from making turns and truckers need to obey these rules where they are in place.
