Failure-to-Yield Motorcycle Collisions a Growing Problem
The U.S. Department of Transportation reports turning left in front of an oncoming rider is blamed for 38 percent of such collisions. In nearly 1 in 4 crashes, both vehicles are traveling straight. In other cases, a driver fails to properly judge a motorcycle’s speed or distance, and pulls in front of an oncoming rider.
The National Institutes of Health has published a review of motorcycle collisions caused by right-of-way violations. The report found a motorcycle’s conspicuity, as well as speed-and-judgment errors by drivers, were leading causes of collisions. Older motorists may be particularly prone to judgment errors involving speed and distance.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration encourages riders to take steps to make themselves more visible:
Lighting Factors: Florida law requires use daytime headlamps. Most motorcycles sold in the United States after 1979 have automatic headlamps, which have been proven effective in reducing the risks of a collision. Headlight modulators and multiple taillights have also been shown to increase visibility.
Motorcycle Equipment: Additional front bodywork, windshields and fairings have been found to reduce the risk of collision with another motor vehicle.
Bright Colors: Wearing bright clothing and using other high-visibility gear is an easy and cost-effective way for riders to reduce collision risks.
Rider Positioning/Lane Use: Rider safety courses and government resources offer tips on lane use and rider education and training.
Help for Injured Riders in Southwest Florida
Yet our motorcycle injury attorneys in Fort Myers and Cape Coral know a simple truth: Even the safest riders cannot ensure their safety when confronted with a reckless or negligent driver.
The majority of riding collisions are caused by distracted drivers, drunk drivers, speeding drivers and drivers who simply fail to show motorcyclists the courtesy due every motorist on the road. Unfortunately, these collisions often result in disabling injuries for riders, who must then struggle with lost wages in the wake of mounting medical debt and the cost of rehabilitation.
Securing the counsel of a law firm dedicated to representing motorcycle accident victims and their families is vital when it comes to protecting financial welfare.
